News Brief

Egypt moved its Gaza Strip embassy to the West Bank. Cairo announced the relocation this week, the last diplomatic disentanglement by Egypt from Gaza since Hamas took over the territory last week. Shortly after Hamas routed Fatah, Egyptian mediators were withdrawn from Gaza. Egypt ruled Gaza between 1948 and 1967, and in recent years has served as an Israeli-Palestinian peace mediator. Israel has proposed that Egypt send peacekeepers to prevent arms smuggling to Hamas in Gaza, but Cairo, which has been at pains to deal with Islamist dissidents on its own turf, has been lukewarm to the idea.
