A break in trade relations between the Arab states and West Germany if the reparations pact with Israel is ratified, was threatened today by the Egyptian consul in Frankfurt, in a statement issued in the name of the Arab delegation which came to Germany to protest completion of the reparations agreement.
The Egyptian consul’s statement declared that the Arab delegation had come to no agreement “of an economic nature” with the German officials with whom it had been discussing the reparations agreement and a German offer to the Arab states of favorable trade arrangements to offset any ill will resulting from the German-Israel treaty. The Arab statement also complained that the Arab delegation had received “not the slightest” consideration of its demands that the reparations agreement be scrapped.
In Bonn, however, an official spokesman of the German government indicated that the talks between the Arabs and German officials had resulted in “a friendly agreement on the nature of future relations with the Arab countries.”
At a meeting in Cologne yesterday, addressed by West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, tremendous applause drowned out objections when the Chancellor said that West Germany must make compensation to Israel and the Jewish people “to the greatest possible extent.” Earlier, the Chancellor had been interrupted and heckled with shouts of “lies” and “shut up” when he said that the German people had been responsible for the murder of millions of Jews during the Nazi regime.
