The Egyptian Government today continued to denounce the sale of Phantom jets to Israel by the United States. An official spokesman called the delivery of the first Phantoms a grave development in the Mideast conflict and said that the U.S. had been expected to end its policy of supplying arms to Israel. Iraq and Syria voiced similar sentiments.
The Guardian reported from Beirut today that President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt is expected to fly to Moscow within a few days for talks with Soviet leaders. The paper said the 51-year-old Egyptian leader will also undergo treatment for the same leg ailment that brought him to Moscow over a year ago.
According to the Guardian, the dispute between Palestinian guerrillas and Lebanese authorities is reaching “crisis proportions.” The guerrillas have rejected an ultimatum by the Beirut regime to hand over the men responsible for an armed clash with Lebanese troops at a refugee camp 10 days ago. The clash occurred when Lebanese soldiers tried to pull down an unauthorized structure in the camp that was to be used as headquarters for the “Palestinian armed struggle command.” A Palestinian guerrilla leader was quoted as warning that his men would turn their guns on the Lebanese Army if the latter attempted to interfere with their campaign to “liberate” Palestine.
