In spite of picketing continued by members of the Seafarers’ International Union here, the Egyptian ship, Star of Assuan, was unloaded at its pier here today by local members of the International Longshoremen’s Association. The ship has been picketed since its arrival in the Montreal harbor last Wednesday.
A spokesman for the ILA, explaining why the longshoremen unloaded the ship, stated: “We are in sympathy with Israel. But we have a contract to honor, and it does not allow us to sympathize with every cause. ” The ILA said the longshoremen’s union spokesmen, does not regard the SIU picket line as “a bona fide strike picket” but rather as “a sympathy boycott. “
Meanwhile, the SIU not only kept up picketing but also refused to allow its members to work on a tug hired by the Egyptian ship to move the vessel from one berth to another.
