The Albert Einstein Foundation, through its board of directors, announced today the election of S. Ralph Lazrus as president, to succeed Dr. Israel Goldstein, who resigned Sept. 16th. The Foundation plans to establish a Jewish-sponsored, secular, non-quota university in Waltham, Massachusetts, to be open to students and faculty on the sole basis of scholastic merit.
Mr. Lazrus has been associated with the foundation since its inception, as chairman of the Founder’s Campaign Committee, and a member of the board of directors. In accepting the presidency of the Foundation, he said: “Our one goal is to complete the organization of the university project at the earliest possible date. During the formative stages of the Foundation, great strides were made in this direction under the able presidency of Dr. Goldstein. It remains now to finish the job which was so well begun. Dr. Einstein is continuing his active interest and support, and we have every assurance of success.”
A resident of Lawrence, N.Y., Mr. Lazrus has been long associated with philanthropic affairs. Besides the Einstein Foundation, his present civic and philanthropic affiliations include: Woodmere Academy, Woodmere, L.I., as vice-president; United Palestine Appeal, as vice-president; Five Towns Community Chest, as chairman of the board; Jewish Statistical Bureau, as chairman of the board; United Jewish Appeal, as national chairman of the jewelry division, and as a director; Jewish Telegraphic Agency, as treasurer; and American Institute of International Information, as treasurer.
