President Eisenhower was urged by the American Jewish Congress today to extend to the important area of housing the national administration’s “continuing and effective attacks upon racial and religious discrimination. “In a letter sent to the President, the AJC noted that the approval by Mr. Eisenhower of the Housing Act of 1954 “provides appropriate opportunity for careful reconsideration of our housing laws on discriminatory practices.”
The American Jewish Congress charged that “those who administer the Federal housing program have not yet undertaken responsibility to insure that it does not cause racial discrimination.” It further noted that “the various housing programs administered by the Federal government have accelerated rather than retarded the tendency in American cities to exclude non-white and ethnic and religious minorities from the housing market.”
