Eli Wiesel, the Jewish writer whose best known works have been on Holocaust themes, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by several members of the Bundestag faction of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its coalition partner, the Free Democratic Party (FDP). They wrote to the Norwegian Prize Committee proposing Wiesel for his contributions to promoting understanding and conciliation in the post-war world.
