Emory University, which announced recently that it would establish a chair of Judaic studies in its department of religion, has received a gift of $150,000 toward support of that chair. The contribution was made by Mr. and Mrs. I.T. Cohen, of this city, in memory of their son, Jay Cohen, a law graduate of Emory Law School, and the latter’s wife. Jay and his wife, Leslie, perished in a disastrous hotel fire in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1963.
Sanford S. Atwood, president of the university, announced that a drive for $500,000 to establish the chair of Judaic studies will be started under the chairmanship of William R. Bowdoin, chairman of Emory’s program for mobilizing educational resources and ideas “for tomorrow.” Co-chairmen of that campaign are Dr. Irving N. Goldstein and Max Rittenbaum. Dr. Jack Boozer, chairman of the university’s department of religion, said a noted Jewish scholar will be added to the faculty, making available “a rich religious and cultural heritage.”
