Clerical and professional employees of the American Jewish Congress went on strike today in a dispute over wages. Members of Local 1707 of the Community and Social Agency Employees, an affiliate of the State, County and Municipal Employees Union (AFL) began picketing AJ Congress headquarters in Manhattan after negotiations with management ended in a deadlock. There are 60 employees in the local.

According to Rose Englander, an employee of the AJ Congress publicity department, the strike was voted 54-4 on Monday but negotiations continued after the employees’ contract with the AJ Congress expired on Dec. 31. The union is demanding wage increases of $12.50 per week for clerical employees and $1,250 per year for professional employees.
