Abolition of special minority status for the welfare institutions maintained by the Jewish community and other minority groups in this city was demanded this week by Moise Cohen, only Jewish member of the Istanbul Municipal Council.

Mr. Cohen argued that allocation of funds to institutions on the basis of whether they were operated by minority groups or not is unconstitutional. He was supported by the representative of the Greek community and by the city’s Mayor, Prof. Fahrettin K. Gokay. Both advocated equality for all citizens, regardless of race or religion.
