Prime Minister Levi Eshkol and Defense Minister Moshe Dayan thanked Israel’s armed forces and police today for the success of Thursday’s Independence Day military parade in Jerusalem, the largest in Israel’s history, which went off without incident.
Mr. Eshkol expressed his appreciation in a statement at the weekly Cabinet meeting today. Gen Dayan wrote a letter of congratulations to Maj. Gen. Chaim Bar-Lev, Chief of Staff. The Prime Minister also reported to the Cabinet on the most recent talks between Foreign Minister Abba Eban and Ambassador Gunnar Jarring, the United Nations special emissary to the Middle East. No details were made public. Mr. Eban is presently on a tour of the Scandinavian countries. Defense Minister Dayan reported to the Cabinet on the security situation.
Mr. Eshkol, in his statement on the Independence Day parade, also congratulated the television crew which televised the parade live in Israel’s first national TV broadcast. The only troublesome aspect of the parade, which drew about 30,000 vehicles into Jerusalem, was the prodigious traffic Jam that occurred when most of the vehicles attempted to leave the city simultaneously at the end of the parade. The Minister of Transport was expected to appoint a committee on the problem.
