The “Tel Azizat” area near the Syrian frontier was evacuated today in accordance with provisions of the Israeli-Syrian armistice agreement, it was officially announced here.
Meanwhile, the mixed Israeli-Syrian armistice commission met today at the customs house near the Bnot Yaacov bridge. Participants in the meeting included chief of truce Brig. Gen. William Riley and Lt. Col. Moshe Dayan, of the Israeli Army. They discussed the agenda for the next parley, which was set for Tuesday in Rosh Pina.
An official communique reviewing the progress of the mixed Israeli-Transjordan armistice commission meeting in Jerusalem said that a “little headway was made with discussions of an agenda, but positive progress cannot be reported.” The commission has been conducting meetings for the past three weeks to map out a plan for Jerusalem’s communications and public services.
Only eight Arab residents of Jewish-Jerusalem have applied for reunion with their war-separated families since the opening of a registration office at the beginning of this month. Applications for the repatriation of some 800 relatives now living outside Israel have been filed to date in Haifa.
It is generally expected that the total number of applications for the repatriation of displaced Arab relatives will be much lower than was anticipated by Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett and the Knesset. This trend is also noted as indicating that Arab refugees are not rushing to return to Israel.
