Messages of grief and sorrow continued to be expressed by leaders of Jewish organizations throughout the world, Philip Givens, president of the Canadian Zionist Federation, said in a statement that Mr, Pincus “influenced non-Zionists to become part of the Zionist family and worked together for the Zionist ideals of strengthening the State of Israel and reaching Jewish life in the diaspora.”
Leaders of the Zionist Federation, Hadassah WIZO, the Zionist Workers Movement of Canada. Hapoel Hamizrachi, Pioneer Women, the Zionist Organization of Canada, the Zionist Revisionists, the United Poale Zion and the Zionist Revisionists, Women’s Organization were present Friday at a memorial meeting here under the chairmanship of Dr.Leon Kronish, vice-president of the Canadian Zionist Federation.
In New York, Carl Glick. president, and Gavnor L Jacobson ,executive vice-president, United Hias Service, stated that Mr. Pincus “devoted his life to Zionism, to Israel and to his people. His work for Jewish immigration and his enormous accomplishments for the Jewish people and the state of Israel will stand as a monument to his memory.”
A memorial gathering took place in Rex House, in London. Leaders of the Zionist Federation, the Joint Israel Appeal, the Jewish National Fund, the Jewish Agency and the entire staff of Rex House were present. A tribute was paid by Dr. S. Levenberg, representative of the Jewish Agency in Britain. The El Mole Rachamim was intoned by.Dr.l Levy, director of the Jewish National Fund in Britain, The chairman of the Zionist Federation, Abraham Kramer, presided.
In Johannesburg, Jews in South Africa, where Mr.Pincus was born and first attained positions in Zionist leadership, were shocked by his passing. All communal institutions sent condolences. Edel Horwitz. president, and Julius Weinstein, chairman of the Zionist Federation attended the funeral. Special memorial services were held in Johannesburg Synagogue tonight.
The British Poale Zion, in a telegram to Moshe Rivlin, director general of the Jewish Agency said: “The untimely death of Louis Pincus robs the world Jewish Zionist movement and the Israel labor movement of an outstanding and dedicated leader.”
Reports reaching Tel Aviv from the Soviet Union say a number of Jews in Minsk.were summoned to the Ovir office several days ago and forced to sign statements in which they declared they did not want to go to Israel. They were people whose relatives in Israel or elsewhere had asked that they be allowed to join their families outside the Soviet Union In Israel this was seen as an effort by the Russians. to substantiate their claim that hundreds of Jews have changed their minds and no longer want to emigrate to Israel.
