Rep. Leonard Farbstein, New York Democrat, urged on the House floor today that a United Nations investigation be undertaken immediately into the treatment of Jews in Arab countries. The Congressman said he has written to Secretary of State Dean Rusk asking him to instruct the U.S. delegation to the U.N, to propose the investigation.

Rep. Farbstein said “the reports become more frequent of the secret practice of genocide within the boundaries of the Arab states. We can no longer doubt that the Jewish population of Egypt and other Arab countries is currently being held hostage in the conflict with Israel. We know that large numbers of Jews have been sent to what we charitably call concentration camps, where they are left to wither and die.”

(A U.N. investigation of the condition of civilians in the Middle East war zone was ordered by the Security Council several months ago. Israel agreed to cooperate provided the investigation also covered Jews In Arab states. But Arab refusal to permit such an investigation has forced Secretary-General U Thant to delay naming his emissary.)
