Cairo radio reported last night that El Fatah has agreed to a request from Lebanese authorities to temporarily suspend their terrorist activities against Israel from Lebanese territory in order not to subject Lebanon to further reprisals from Israel. According to Cairo radio, El Fatah has announced its decision following a series of meetings with Lebanese officials including Premier Saeb Salaam.
At a meeting Saturday night, Fatah leader Yassir Arafat told Salaam that the movement has decided to avoid any operation which might lead to a reprisal against Lebanese territory and stressed Fatah’s concern for Lebanese sovereignty and independence.
It is believed here that El Fatah bowed to the Lebanese request in the hope of preserving their presence in that country which has become the site of the largest concentrations of Palestinian terrorists. They also hope to achieve quiet cooperation with the Lebanese Army which took over “Fatahland” in the aftermath of the Israeli operation against terrorist bases last month.
