Shmuel Dayan, father of Defense Minister Moshe Dayan and one of the pioneer settlers of Israel, died today at Hadassah Hospital at the age of 77. Mr. Dayan, one of the founders of Nahalal, the first small holders cooperative settlement, was born in the Ukraine and came to Palestine early in the century. He worked at Petach Tikvah and Hedera and was among the founders of Deganya, the first kibbutz. He was a delegate to numerous Zionist congresses, a member of the Zionist General Council and for ten years after the establishment of the State, a member of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. He was the author of several books on the history of Jewish settlement in Palestine, one of them written in collaboration with his granddaughter, Yael Dayan.
