Fervently Orthodox legislators in Israel’s Knesset passed a preliminary reading of a bill that would impose a seven-year jail sentence on any woman who reads out loud from the Torah or wears a prayer shawl at the Western Wall. In response, the head of the Na’amat women’s organization said a bill should be passed imposing a seven-year sentence on any Knesset member who tries to pass ridiculous bills.
