Almost all employment agencies in the Greater Miami area were found in a survey to willingly accept discriminatory job orders, the Florida office of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, which made the survey, declared today.
Arthur Teitelbaum, the Florida ADL director, said details of the inquiry will be sent soon to Florida Secretary of State Tom Adams, with a request for appropriate action. Job agencies in Florida are licensed by the Secretary of State office.
Mr. Teitelbaum said his office conducted a placement survey of 38 private employment agencies and the office of the State Employment Service which services the Miami area. The survey sought to learn whether the agencies would accept telephonic requests expressing preference for a stenographer who was “Protestant and white.” He said that in every case, the private job agencies willingly accepted the job order. Only the Miami office of the State Employment Service rejected the request as involving racial and religious discrimination.
