The first group of Austrian Jews repatriated from the refugee colony in Shanghai arrived here yesterday.
There were 34 persons in the transport and 766 are expected in the middle of next month. Another 1,300 men, women and children in China have received Austrian visas, while 357 have been issued to Jews now residing in Palestine.
The new arrivals found lodging either with relatives or in hotel rooms provided by the Joint Distribution Committee. The Vienna housing office has promised to provide two community houses for future repatriates, but arrangements are still uncertain. Some of the luggage of the 34 returnees was stolen and the authorities told them that it was taken by Polish fascists in a DP camp where the baggage was stored for several days.
