The first group of Jewish refugees from Poland who were stranded in Russia reached here today by way of Teheran, Persia. Another group of 150 Polish Jews are expected to arrive here from Teheran in the next few days.
The Palestine press reports today that 11,000 Polish civilians from Russia, Jews and non-Jews, are now in Persia en route to countries of the Middle East. They include 6,000 women and 1,500 children. They are all being taken care of by Polish welfare organizations which make no distinction among the refugees.
Cabled advices received here today from the Jewish Relief Association in Bombay inform that 161 Polish children arrived there this week. There were only nine Jewish children among them.
The Palestine press states that the Iraqian premier, Nuri Essaid, in the course of an address delivered before the Iraqian senate, is reported to have said: “I have good news. Palestine, Syria and all Arabs will attain their independence. I received a cable to this effect from the Iraqian minister in Washington, assuring me and every Arab with regard to the future of these territories. I cannot say more about it at present.”
(A high official spokesman in Washington said today that the U.S. Government has given no guarantees or assurances to Iraq regarding the post-war position of Near Eastern countries. The Iraqian minister, Ali Jawdat, when questioned by the JTA about the statement, would say only: “I can not discuss it,”)
