Sam Davis, a 62-year-old engineer turned shoe retailer, is the first Jewish mayor to be elected in Saint John, New Brunswick, one of English-speaking Canada’s oldest cities. He had served on the City Council for eight years and was elected by a landslide majority last month. He is a graduate of the Massachusetts institute of Technology and the University of New Brunswick. Saint John has a population of 86,000 (109,000 total with the suburbs) of which 1,500 are Jewish. The city was established by Loyalists (Tories) in 1785.
