The first trees in the President Peron Forest, sponsored by the Jewish community of Argentina, were planted today along the Western approach to this city. Present at the ceremonies were Premier Moshe Sharett, members of the Cabinet, Speaker of the Parliament Joseph Sprinzak, Argentina Ambassador Pablo Manguel and the heads of the Jewish National Fund and other national institutions.
A message from Gen. Peron, read to the audience, stressed Argentine-Israel friendship and expressed the hope that the trees planted in Israel would grow and “testify to the creative work done by the Jewish people and the moral sacrifices borne by them to build up their state.”
Mr. Sharett said the forest symbolized a “three-fold covenant:” between Israel and Argentine, between Israel and the Argentine Jews, and between Argentine Jewry and the Argentine Government. Dr. Manguel praised President Peron and expressed the hope that “as these trees grow, so shall grow the friendship between both nations.”
