South African Jewish history was made here today when, at a gala event at the Carlton Hotel here, this country’s first two, locally trained, rabbis received their ordination. They compose the first graduating class of the Ministers Training College, established here five years ago jointly by the Jewish Board of Deputies, the Federation of Synagogues and the Board of Jewish Education.
Chief Rabbi L. I. Rabinowitz, and Rabbi Hillel Medalie, of Leeds, England, currently visiting here, were the principal speakers at the reception tendered to the two newly ordained clergymen, Rev. Abner Weiss and Rev. Gerald Mazibow. Both new rabbis responded with fervent addresses. Rev. Weiss has just been appointed as spiritual leader of a congregation in Durban.
