The trade union department of Histadrut, Israel’s labor federation, has approved the strike of food-cannery employes, effective Sunday, thus backing the decision of the food workers’ union. Histadrut’s approval aggravated the labor situation in Israel, as the employers claim the workers’ demands go beyond the general agreement signed two months ago by the employers and the federation. The employers’ threat to shut down struck plants has been deplored by Histadrut trade union chiefs as “incomprehensible and inflexible.”
