Gerald A. Berlin of Cambridge was sworn in as the first Special Assistant Attorney General in charge of Massachusetts new Division of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. The unit, the first created by an Attorney General of any state, was formed to safeguard all civil rights guaranteed by the Federal and Massachusetts constitutions.
A recognized authority on civil rights who was active in obtaining enactment of the state’s Fair Educational Practices Law and the Fair Real Estate Practices Law, Mr. Berlin was until his appointment regional attorney and director of the Commission on Law and Social Action of the New England Region of the American Jewish Congress. A lecturer at two universities in recent years, Mr. Berlin, an attorney, has been interested in problems of legal psychiatry.
