Former Chicago Newsboy Leaves $1,000,000 for Charity

Three Chicago institutions will benefit to the extent of almost $1,000,000 by the will of Adolph J. Lichtstern, Chicago board of trade operator who came to this city from Germany when he was three years old. and who left an estate of $5,000,000 when he died last Friday.

The University of Chicago will receive between $300,000 and $400,000 under the will,the Jewish Charities of Chicag between $150,000 and $200,000 and the Michael Reese hospital betwent $150,000 and $200,000. The charity bequests are left outright, with no trust funds or other modifying provisions.

To his widow Mrs. Marion Richey Lichtstern, Mr. Lichtstern left all of his personal effects and one-third of the estate. This according to Attorney Austrian. is in addition to the sum of $650,000 that Mr. Lichtstern made over to his wife and to his four surviving sisters shortly before his death.

The University of Chicago is left Xtwo-sixteenths of this residuary estate, the Jewish Charities and the Michael Rees hospital, one-sixteenth each.

The remainder of the estate is left in four equal parts for the benefit of Mr. Lichtstern’s four sisters as long as they live.

Mr. Lichtstern was 66 years old when he died. He sold papers on Chicago streets when he was a boy.

Dr. Abraham Flexner, until recently Director of the General Educational Board of New York on thesteamer Paris. During the last two months he has lectured at Oxford as the annual Rhodes Trust lecturer.

America’s academic growth, he said is interesting the universities of England. Through this and the Rhodes scholarships awarded annually, British colleges are eager to cooperate with exchange of students from American schools. Dr. Flexner will proceed to Canada for a vacation.

Preparations are under way to celebrate the eight anniversary of the existence of the Jewish Court of Arbitration, in New York. Papers of incorporation were granted the Court by the Department of State at Albany.

In its eight year of existence the Jewish Court of Arbitration, settled more than 4,500 disputes and controversies between Jewish lodges, synagogues and fraternities.

The ceebration will take place on July 31, at the Hotel McAlpin. Judge Morris Eder is president.
