Former Romanian Communist Ion Iliescu defeated extreme nationalist Corneliu Vadim Tudor in presidential runoff elections. The Romanian Jewish Federation had issued a statement saying Tudor was “a staunch enemy of the Jews” for many years. Tudor’s newspapers have repeatedly published anti-Semitic articles.
