Four Ukrainians were sentenced to death for murdering Jews and other Soviet citizens during the German occupation of the area in world War II, according to a news dispatch received here from Kiev today.
The trial took place at Smela, a town about 30 miles from the large Ukrainian city of Cherkassy. The Cherkassy District Court returned guilty verdicts, and imposed the death sentences on A. Litvin, I. Piotrovsky, F. Pomenko and W. Knowalenko. Testimony against the men established the fact that they not only served the Nazis during the occupation period but also that they had personally participated in killing “thousands of Soviet citizens and Jews.”
