The first free loan society for the refugee settlement project at Sosua has been established as a result of the visit of Arthur M. Lamport, New York banker.
Lamport, after a survey of the colonization site, proposed the establishment of a loan society with an initial capital investment of $5,000 as a concrete measure to aid the settlers. Two Jewish citizens of Ciudad Trujillo, Abraham Staiman and Leopold Kohn, offered to contribute to the undertaking.
