The Middle East situation probably will be on the agenda when French Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville meets with Secretary of State Dean Rusk in Washington on May 25, a French Foreign Ministry spokesman said here today.
It was generally believed that the French Foreign Minister would express his satisfaction over President Kennedy’s declaration of support for Israel’s security at his press conference last week. The French diplomat also was expected to seek to impress on United States officials he will meet, the need to maintain at all costs “peace and calm” in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, French officials were reported following closely recent developments in the Arab world, particularly in Syria. A French Foreign Office spokesman described the frictions between President Nasser of Egypt and the again dominant Ba’ath party members in Damascus as “very serious.”
