The full text of Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald’s references to the Palestine events in his speech before the League of Nations Council at its opening session today follows:
“I am sure you will expect me to give you assurance about the situation in Palestine. I believe I am speaking the mind of every national representative in this assembly when I say that we offer to the victims of the recent events in Palestine and to their families and relatives our sympathy and we assure them of our support. There is no racial conflict in what happened in Palestine the other day. There was no conflict between Moslems and Jews. I do not care what their race or religion is, whether they are Moslem or Jew, Christian or non-Christian, there is no differentiation in my mind.
“No civilized nation with any political responsibility and no nation cooperating with other nations to do the best for the people of the world will ever yield to the outbursts of criminality and murder because that would be the triumph of forces that the League of Nations was formed to control.
“I appeal to the leaders of those people to condemn what has been done and to unite with us to see what the situation demands.
“Our first duty is to get the situation in hand and that has been done pretty well. Our second duty is to enquire into all conditions in order that the remedy may be found and to prevent recurrence of such things in the future.”
