An Israeli-owned fully kosher restaurant is to open at the Egyptian-government owned Intercontinental-Savoy Hotel in Cairo shortly.
Moshe Paritzky, a former resident of Cairo, said today that when he and his partner had told members of the Jewish community in Cairo that when they planned to open a kosher restaurant they had been warned that the government would never allow it, “especially in a government-owned hotel.”
But he said agreement was speedily reached with the hotel management which welcomed the idea as it would attract many American Jewish tourists. Paritzky said the investment was small, as he would merely be purchasing new equipment and sending a rabbi-shochet (ritual slaughterer) who would act as supervisor, and two Israeli cooks, one for “Western” dishes and the other for Oriental meals.
