Funeral of Dead Vilna Studemt Passes Quietly: All Jewish Shops Closel and No Jews in Street: Big Pol

All Jewish shops in Vilna were closed to-day, and there were no Jews out in the streets during the funeral of the National Democratic student, Stanislaw Waclawski, which passed off without any disturbances. There were about 5,000 people in the funeral procession, which was headed by 25 priests, and the Professors of the University were present. There were a great number of wreaths.

The procession was completely surrounded by a strong force of police, to prevent any attempt at starting a new anti-Jewish attack, and police reinforcements were held in reserve and the fire brigade was under orders to turn out in case of emergency.

The National Democratic student union has arranged a memorial meeting to be held to-morrow (Saturday) at the Krakowski Church.

There are three Jewish students injured in the attack made on the Jews at the University by the National Democrats who are now lying at the point of death, says a statement issued by the Union of Jewish Students, besides scores of other Jewish students who have been seriously injured, and they, as well as the student Waclawski would be going about sound and well now, if it were not for the unjustified attack launched by the National Democratic students, who are therefore solely responsible for his death and for all the trouble that has ensued.

There are no words strong enough to condemn the action of the National Democratic Party and its authoritative organ, the “Gazeta Warszawska”, in issuing a special edition on Tuesday giving a completely false report of the occurrences in Vilna, says an editorial appearing in the “Gazeta Polska”, the chief organ of the Government Party.

A few days ago, it points out, the same paper published a story about a mob of Jews attacking a priest in Warsaw, spitting at him and insulting him. It was clearly an attempt to incite religious feeling against the Jews, and to extend the anti-Jewish troubles. The mysterious priest made one appearance and then vanished.

Now there is a real dead body in Vilna, and the “Gazeta Warszawska” has seized on it with ghoulish glee, inciting the passions of its readers by accusing the Jews of murdering a Polish National Democratic student. But if it were not for the National Democrats and their agitation, the students would all be doing their studies quietly in the universities, instead of knocking each other about in the streets. It was the National Democrats who instigated the disturbances, which were bound sooner or later to result in dead and injured. No matter whose the hand that struck him down, it was the National Democrats who murdered the student Stanislaw Waclawski, the “Gazeta Polska” declares. And this paper is now trying to exploit the dead body of the man whom it murdered, seeking to use it as a weapon with which to add a score of deaths to this one.

The Government Party Deputies in the Vilna district have held a meeting to consider the situation, at which they have adopted a resolution demanding the resignation of a number of officials in the Vilna Administration, on the ground that they have failed in their duty to prevent the anti-Jewish outbreak.

TROUBLE SPREAD TO SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN VILNA

The secondary schools in Vilna have been closed down to-day because the anti-Jewish agitation has spread to them now. Both the Christian and the Jewish pupils of the schools have been ordered that they must not be out in the streets after five o’clock in the evening.

The Union of ex-Students at Vilna University (graduates) has adopted a resolution declaring themselves against the anti-Jewish excesses and condemning them as a disgrace to Vilna University.
