Pointing out the danger of institutionalized religion which faces every creed after its pioneering stage, Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver of Cleveland, guest speaker at the first joint public luncheon meeting of the Coucil of Social Agencies and the Council of Churches, meeting at the Central Y.M.C.A., declared that “the first great service that the church and synagogue can render the cause of social justice is to galvanize by education and inspection the will of men so that they will seek justice and preserve it.”
All forms of dictatorships, said the speaker, have the bond of being opposed to the freedom of the common man. Fascism, Communism and Nazism all regiment intellect into narrow and canonized channels.” In Germany, he concluded, “women have been constricted by this mediaeval furor which has swept the world. Hitlerism is the most mediaeval of these movements.”
