The Federation of General Zionists, which emerged from last week’s municipal elections as the second strongest political party in Israel, today issued a proclamation calling for new Parliamentary elections.
The proclamation says that the municipal elections “revealed a decisive swing in public opinion.” It points out that “large numbers of Israel voters expressed confidence in the General Zionist Federation” and that leaders of the Federation are dis1/2 appointed with the present government coalition “which persists in retaining authority against the wishes of the population.”
In Jerusalem, the final distribution of several municipal seats was announced as follows: Five seats to Mapai; four to the General Zionists; six to the Religious groups; two to the Herut; two to the Progressive Party; and one to the Mapam.
The Mapai, Israel’s Labor Party, has named Isaac Ben Zvi as its candidate for Jerusalem mayor. The General Zionists offered Eli Eliashar as their candidate, while the candidate of the Religious groups is S.Z. Shragai and the candidate of the Progressive Zionists is the present mayor, Daniel Auster.
