The West German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung today took issue with Germans who dismiss as “childish pranks” the recent wave of decocrations of Jewish cemeteries in various parts of West Germany and the Soviet sector of Berlin.

The newspaper declared that the attacks demonstrated with “terrifying lucidity” that racial intolerance is still being taught in some German families. Asking what each and every German has done to discredit anti-Semitism, the newspaper called on responsible Germans, including politicians, educators and newspapermen, to lead a campaign against anti-Semitism.

The Hamburg police today attempted to whitewash the anti-Jewish demonstrations which occurred in that city last April. 14, during the trial of Veit Harlan, Nazi producer of the anti-Semitic film “Jew Suess.” Reuters stated that the police issued a report denying that any demonstrations occurred.

Both German and foreign press associations reported on April 14 that a crowd threatened a half-Jewish witness against Harlan in the courtroom and later outside the building. When the witness, Miss Tarina Nichoff, made her way through the crowd to a waiting police car she was threatened and called a “Jewish swine.” The following day, West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer publicly apologized for the incident.
