Germany has begun erecting a memorial in Berlin to the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis. The first 10 of a planned 2,700 concrete pillars, part of a memorial that will rise up in the shadow of the German Reichstag Parliament building, went up on Saturday near the Brandenburg Gate, news agencies reported. Construction of the memorial, designed by U.S. architect Peter Eisenman, follows years of agonizing in Germany about how best to commemorate the Holocaust.
