Gibraltar Jews Move to Madeira

December 6, 1940
See Original Daily Bulletin From This Date

A small party of Gibraltar Jews, under the leadership of David Benaim, vice-president of the Gibraltar Hebrew Congregation, left for Madeira when the island was evacuated, The Jewish Chronicle reports, and they have established a compact little community at Funchal.

As there was no constituted Hebrew congregation there, Benaim procured Sifrei Torah and other ritual appurtenances from Gibraltar and Lisbon and instituted regular services.
