The sufferings of the famine stricken population in some Bessarabian cities continue to claim the attention of public opinion here.

The newspapers carry extensive reports of the plight of the Jewish population in the famine stricken area. One report emanating from Ackerman, Bessarabia, relates a tragic scene before the headquarters of the Jewish Relief Committee. Hundreds of men, women and children stormed the Committee’s headquarters, crying, “Give us bread!”

Similar scenes are reported from the harbor city Reni. A part of the population fled to Galatz. Women can be seen in the streets wailing in prayer, “Give us bread. Our children are dying of hunger!”

Dr. Hellmann, chairman of the Jewish Relief Committee, despatched an urgent plea to American Landsmanschaften asking for speedy remittance of funds to continue the rescue work as many of the well-to-do citizens who were in a position to contribute are now in need themselves.
