Former President Wilson while at the peace conference at Versailles was instrumental in exacting the guarantees of Jewish rights from Roumania, ex-Premier Vojvod revealed today in an address. The dramatic scene of the American President’s championing of Jewish rights was portrayed by the speaker.
In his address the former premier said he was compelled by Wilson to provide international guarantees for the Jewish citizens of Roumania because Premier Bratiano had broken his pledges.
Bratiano’s failure to keep his pledges brought him into disrepute at the peace conference and Wilson and Lloyd George at first refused to receive him.
When finally President Wilson consented to see Bratiano his first question was concerning the Jews. Bratiano replied “Roumania is swamped with foreign Jews”. Wilson was not satisfied with this reply and insisted that Roumania having failed to keep her promises must give international guarantees. The same day, the decree relating to Jewish naturalization was issued, Vojvod said.
