Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, said in Parliament today that it was “shocking” to think that some Nazi criminals would avoid punishment because of the expiration of the statute of limitations next year on prosecution of such criminals.
Replying to three motions concerning the May 1965 expiration date, Mrs. Meir added that Israel was not motivated by revenge in its insistence that all Nazi criminals be punished, but by the feeling that “mankind could not breathe” as long as Nazi criminals found refuge in other countries, such as Egypt, She added that those who had slaughtered Jews by the million in Europe “naturally find a safe refuge among those intending to perform similar deeds.” When Mrs. Meir expressed objection to a plenum debate on the issue, the matter was referred to committee.
