Arthur J. Goldberg, former U.S. Ambassador to the UN, warned tonight that “much mischief” could result from a Big Four attempt to impose a solution without consent of the Arabs and Israel. Mr. Goldberg, who is president of the American Jewish Committee, was guest speaker at the inaugural dinner of the United Jewish Appeal of France, presided over by Baron Guy de Rothschild. The French UJA raised close to $6 million in 1968 and hopes to top that figure this year. Mr. Goldberg urged the Western powers to continue supplying Israel with defense arms sufficient to prevent a dangerous imbalance of power in the region. “To discontinue arms shipments to Israel in the absence of an arms limitation agreement with the Soviet Union is to invite another conflict and to jeopardize Israel’s security unfairly,” he said.
