Government Officials Stage Four-hour “warning Strike” in Israel; Demand Promotions

A total of 3,600 Israel Government officials, employed in 45 departments, staged a four-hour “warning strike” and issued an ultimatum that their promotion proposals must be granted by Dec. 20. Failing that, the strikers said they would issue a call for a general strike the following day. All government officials in Afuleh, Tiberias and Safed joined the strike.

Premier David Ben Gurion today refused to accept the resignation of Dr. Yacov Shapira, Israel Attorney-General, until the Cabinet had had an opportunity to discuss the matter. Dr. Felix Rosenblueth, Minister of Justice, denied that the preferred resignation had been prompted by differences existing between himself and the Attorney-General.
