Official quarters still maintain that no date has been fixed for evacuation from Palestine, but it is understood that intensive talks are proceeding among the departments concerned and both the Foreign and Colonial Offices are in constant touch with the British delegation at Lake Success. The general impression here is that the government is determined to quit Palestine.
A broadcast by Christopher Holme, former public relations officer in Palestine, is taken to indicate the general lines of the government’s policy. Holme said that the evacuation was necessitated by the general bitterness over constant criticism of British policy, the need to reduce financial and military commitments, the changing situation in the Mediterranean as a result of U.S. influence in Greece and Turkey and, lastly, post-war experience has shown that maintenance of influence in a particular region does not necessitate maintaining a garrison there.
