A spokesman for the embassy of Greece said today that rabbis and Orthodox Jews wearing beards — if they can prove they are not “beatniks” — will be exempted from the newly-announced Greek ban on bearded tourists. He said the exclusion of bearded persons was aimed at non-Greeks who were “beatniks.” If Jews who wear beards for religious reasons can prove their affiliations, they will be admitted, the Embassy spokesman said. But bearded Jewish “beatniks” will be denied entry along with “beatniks” of other religious origins. The spokesman emphasized the exclusion law was aimed at “beatniks” rather than beards.
