Evidence is accumulating of the alarming effect which the continued anti-Jewish agitation, the boycott and the indignities are producing on the morale of the Jewish population. Several instances are reported of Jewish suicides as a result of the persecutions. Today’s press reports the suicide of a Frankfurt merchant named Barber, as well as that of a chemist and his wife by the name of Meyer. There have also been a number of attempted suicides, including Heymann, a Jewish lawyer of Frankfurt who attempted suicide together with his wife. Both are now in hospital in a grave condition.

Examples of the indignities practised on Jews, particularly in the Provinces are particularly difficult to gather. Sometimes they are only brought to light through unguarded statements in local Nazi papers or by an occasional statement made by a refugee. The latest instance is that of Glogau where fifteen prominent Jews, including two lawyers and a doctor were forced into a cattle truck which was decorated with a swastika and a placard declaring: “Nothing has happened to us”, and paraded through the town before they were released.
