Restrictions on Jewish immigration by the Guatemalan Government have been confirmed by Minister Adrian Recinos in a letter to Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the American Jewish Congress, it was announced today. The Congress has lodged a protest with the Minister against the action of his Government, which is a member of the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees.
Recinos’ letter said: “According to the existing regulations, the immigration of Jews to the Republic of Guatemala is restricted. There are no restrictions for temporary visitors and tourists. The Government, howerver, reserves the right to extend the visas or tourist permits. In view of the abuses of certain persons of the Jewish race who have entered the country as transients or tourists and have stayed there illegally.”
