Hadassah announced today the appointment of an emergency committee in Palestine to supervise and safeguard its network of health institutions there. According to Mrs. David de Sola Pool, president of Hadassah, the plans for the committee were made several weeks ago when conditions in the Near East became threatening.
The committee is headed by Dr. Judah L. Magnes, president of the Hebrew University, and includes Miss Henrietta Szold, Pinchus Rutenberg, president of the Palestine Jewish National Council, and Julius Simon, president of the Palestine Economic Corporation. The group will cooperate with other Palestine health agencies to set up a countrywide system of rural field hospitals and provide for the acceleration of general medical and public health services to the entire population, regardless of race or creed, Mrs. Pool stated.
A cable received today from Dr. Haim Yassky, director of the Rothschild-Hadassah University Hospital and Medical School, revealed that 200 additional beds have already been made available in the new hospital and in the Nathan and Lina Straus Health Center. Subsidies have been given to the Magen David Adom, the Jewish equivalent of the Red Cross, to provide more first-aid service. There has also been an extension of Hadassah’s home visiting, obstetrical and pediatric health services in the rural areas to assure the maintenance of previously established health standards, Mrs. Pool said.
