The Haifa Technical Institute–Technion–opened its academic year with the award of diplomas to 182 architects and engineers at exercises attended by members of the Israel Government, the Jewish Agency, foreign diplomats and leaders in various fields in Israel.

President Yaacov Dori, reviewing progress made at the Institute, said that registration in the technical school was now nearly 1,400. He reported that 373 freshmen had been accepted for the new year and 200 more fully qualified applicants had been turned away because of a lack of facilities. He revealed that two new departments were being opened this year, industrial and management engineering, and agricultural engineering. The latter department is headed by Prof. Walter C. Lowdermilk, noted American soil conservationist.
