Half of Polish Refugees in Russia Are Jews, Labor Committee Estimates

Almost half of all the Polish refugees in Russia are Jews according to an estimate made public today by the Jewish Labor Committee here in connection with the campaign undertaken by the Committee to send old clothing and medicaments to the refugees in Soviet Russia.

A delegation of the Jewish Labor Committee headed by Adolph Held, president, conferred this week in Washington with the Soviet Ambassador there. Ambassador Oumanski assured the delegation that the Soviet Government will undertake all possible measures to transport the shipments delivered by the Jewish Labor Committee on Soviet steamers sailing soon from the Pacific coast. The shipments will be delivered to a relief committee in Russia formed by the Polish Government of Polish, Jewish and other representatives. Instructions to start the collection of clothing and shoes have been sent by the Jewish Labor Committee to all of its branches throughout the country following the conference with the Soviet Ambassador. Simultaneously, two conferences, one of the Workmens’ Circle, a Jewish fraternal labor organization, and the other of representatives of labor unions will be held under the auspices of the Jewish Labor Committee in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, to work out concrete plans for the campaign.
